What to Expect from Your Newborn Photography Session at Home
Planning a newborn photography session is such an exciting step! My in-home, studio-style setup is designed to bring the look of a professional studio right to you, so you can enjoy a relaxed experience without leaving your home. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to expect from start to finish so you feel fully prepared and comfortable.
Booking Your Session: The Basics
We’ll start by scheduling your session months in advance, using your baby’s due date as a placeholder on my calendar. I’ll send you a contract to secure the date and a retainer to confirm your spot. Once that’s set, we’ll hop on a consultation call to go over your preferences—whether you have favorite colors, props you love, or ideas for how you envision your session. We’ll cover it all so that I come prepared with everything needed to bring your vision to life.
Once your little one arrives, you’ll notify me, and we’ll set an exact session date, typically within the first two weeks after birth. This timing is ideal, as babies are usually quite sleepy, which is perfect for those calm, cozy poses we’re aiming for.
Preparing for Your Session at Home
On the day of your session, I’ll bring everything to set up a complete studio in the comfort of your home: props, backdrops, lighting—everything we need to create beautiful images of your little one. Once I arrive, we’ll choose the best place in your home to set up, usually somewhere with enough space and natural light, like your living room.
While I’m setting things up, I’ll have you undress your baby, leaving on just a diaper, and then give them a good feed. Ideally, this will get them into a nice, deep sleep, which makes posing easier. If your baby is still a little too awake, I will rock them gently until they drift off.
The Session: What It Looks Like
Once your baby is snoozing, I’ll start with some poses on a soft beanbag, using a backdrop to create that simple, timeless look.
After that, we’ll move to different props—like a cozy bed, a rustic wooden box, or a little nest setup. I love mixing up these settings to create a variety of images that show your baby’s tiny details in different ways.
And if your baby is taking a while to drift off to sleep, no worries at all! I can still get going with poses that work beautifully for awake babies too.
Throughout the session, if your baby needs to pause for a feed, a quick change, or just a cuddle, we’ll take breaks as needed. My focus is on creating a calm, enjoyable experience for you and your baby.
Including the Family: Lifestyle Photos
Once we’ve wrapped up the studio-style photos, I’ll capture some lifestyle family photos in spaces like the nursery or the master bedroom. These settings bring a personal touch to the images, creating beautiful portraits of your family in the place you feel most comfortable. We’ll keep everything relaxed, giving you time to simply hold your baby and be together as a family.
Wrapping Up
After I’ve taken all the photos, I’ll pack up my gear and leave you to enjoy the rest of your day. My goal is to make this experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible, so you can feel at ease every step of the way.
Viewing Your Photos and Choosing Your Favorites
After the session, I’ll send you an online gallery where you can view all of the photos from our time together. This private gallery allows you to browse through and choose your favorites at your own pace. You’ll also have the option to purchase beautifully crafted albums, wall art, and prints to bring these images to life in your home. Whether you’re looking to create a keepsake album or decorate with wall art, I’m here to guide you through every choice to help preserve these memories in a way that fits your style.
If you have any questions about the process, feel free to reach out. I’m here to help and so excited to create beautiful memories with you and your growing family!
